Modi factor can make or break BJP

NEW DELHI – While some senior leaders, including L K Advani kept mum, other hardliners supported Narendra Modi who was finally crowned as the candidate for prime minister of India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last week. India is due to hold its largest-ever general elections within eight months.
Since Modi’s nomination as PM’s candidate, political observers and analysts across India are watching the situation with great interest. “We are keeping our fingers crossed,” said one analyst. Other opined: “The modi factor will make or break  BJP.”
“The victory of hardliners in BJP suggests that the party’s rallying cry will once again be based on religious lines,” wrote  Robin Chatterjee in his opinion piece that was published in Gulf News of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“It is Modi, however, who stands to be the polarizing figure. His promotion can be a political masterstroke or a total fiasco. He may have orchestrated an economic turnaround in Gujarat, but India sees him as a divisive figure,” Chatterjee further wrote.
